Principal’s Address
The changing seasons bring their own dynamics but here in Coláiste Iognáid November’s arrival means that we are in the process of full preparation for another school show. It is difficult to appreciate that a full year has passed since the 6 th years delivered “Grecian Nights”. Ach tá uair na cinniúna tagtha don 5ú bliain anois agus tá muid lán cinnte go bhfuil oíche den scoth réitithe acu.
The Jes tradition of musicals, drama and a cultivation of a love and appreciation of the arts has left its mark on a generation of students. My own earliest experiences were in Gilbert and Sullivan productions ‘as Gaeilge’ in the Columban Hall led by the late Fr. Bob McGoran S.J. The tradition was revived spectacularly by a Student Prince production by Fr. Murt Curry S.J. in the late seventies.
This year sees Claire Lohan take the director’s mantle for the tenth time alongside Paul Kilraine. From her own 5 th year days in ‘Silas Marner’ to unstinting work in all subsequent shows as director lies a real tale of service to the Jes. Fellow director Paul’s work for all things sport is coupled with the warmest affection for the musical and cultural heritage of the Jes. Claire and Paul’s partnership with all other stakeholders gives the show the greatest standing.
As always the unstinting labours of Tony Bloomer from the Technical Graphics Department and Dee O’ Brien’s empowerment of the Art Department continue to give the show the greatest quality. Their quite and unobtrusive work enables many students gain a real outlet for their talents. Carl Hession is legendary in his service to all things musical in the school. Tonight’s performance is set to add another splendid chapter in that great legacy.
The school through the show wishes to give real expression to its aspiration of developing the whole person and their differing talents. The obvious solidarity and application of all contributors be they leads, lights people, back stage, front of house, singers or dancers has always been the hallmark of the 5 th years experience. ”. Their work and enterprise has a public dimension to it which heightens the challenge. It is a task that has never been shirked.
Apart from the sterling work of the directors and all the other colleagues who are involved in this huge production I would like to thank the staff who have cooperated and backed the venture. The hugely supportive presence of Deputy Principal Catherine Hickey has enabled the directors go about their work in a concentrated fashion. The work of the administrative staff in the office gives everybody a lift. I thank Joan and Lorraine for their fantastic work with programme and tickets. Joe O’ Toole our Plant Manager coupled with the Cleaning Department also contribute handsomely to the smooth running of affairs.
This autumn saw the revival of the Jes Past-Pupils Union. It is always an inspiration to see so many former pupils make a point of returning to view the show. For many past pupils the show is their most valued memory of their time in the school. We trust that next week in the P.P.U.’s Dublin gathering in McGrattans on Saturday 21 st that these memories can be shared again. Please contact any past pupils in your family who now reside in Dublin and ask them to join us that night.
The show is a great Jes night! Dreams, hopes, and aspirations are realised before us, nerves are confronted and banished. We appreciate what our pupils can do and the direction that the teachers so generously afford them. Society may not always place the highest of regard for such happenings. It is a tribute to the wisdom of our parents and Jes teachers that they continue to appreciate what is realised. Ar aghaidh leis an Séo !
