Past Pupils Union to be Re-established

Summer Newsletter

Coláiste Iognáid has won a Hewlett Packard Innovation in Education grant which will provide a mobile classroom of tablet PCs. Along with NUI Galway, the Galway school was selected for its commitment to making practical usage of technology in delivering the school curriculum.  The aim is to create a roaming computer suite which would afford the maximum number of students and teachers a unique opportunity to achieve computer literacy and equip them for participation in knowledge economy.  This platform will allow students to access digitally provided content in an efficient and cost effective manner.

The Jes Wins All-Ireland Hockey

The Jes Senior Hockey team beat Foyle/Londonderry in a thrilling final to win the Kate Russell All-Ireland Cup. The Jes came back from one-nil down at half time to lead two-one in the second half. However, with just 5 minutes remaining, Foyle scored an equaliser to force the game into the 'Golden Goal' extra time. In a goalmouth scramble after 5 minutes, Isabelle Mortimer scored to send Jes supporters wild and the team into the history books!

The Jes Wins Connaught Rugby Cup
The Jes beat Sligo Grammar 10-3 in the final of the Connaught Rugby Cup. In a keenly fought match, the jes's two unconverted tries seemed a tenuous lead in the second half when Sligo got a drop goal and seemed to come back into the game. In the end however, the Jes had done enough a reclaimed the cup for another year!

Debate Club News
As is now customary, Coláiste Iognáid has dominated schools’ debating in the West of Ireland and, indeed, nationally. Pupils from Coláiste Iognáid were National Finalists in two out of three of the country’s best known and most prestigious English Language debating competitions this year.

Students/Teacher Debate
Students and staff were entertained by a lively debate organised to help raise fund for the South Africa Challenge. Twelve Leaving Cert students and three teachers will travell to South Africa in July for two weeks to help build a school for victems of AIDS.

Holocaust Speaker
On Monday May 11, Colaiste Iognaid students in Galway were privileged to hear in person one of the few existing Holocaust survivors, Tomas Reichental, who is currently living in Ireland. Tomas held students spell-bound with his life story: he was born in 1935 in Piestany, Slovakia, and was captured and sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944 when he was only nine years old. He survived it along with his mother, brother, aunt and cousin, but he lost thirty-five members of his family in the Holocaust.

President Mary McAleese's Visit.
President Mary McAleese visited the Jes on Wed. 4 March and addressed the school, staff and parents' groups. The President viewed a number of display boards in the foyer and spoke with representatives of Rugby, Rowing, Hockey, Transition Year Social Outreach and the Slí Eile South Africa trip. She spoke in the school hall on how the gifts and talents of Jes students gave her hope for the future in the light of such depressing financial news.

Grecian Nights
The school show thrilled the audiences for four fabulous sell out nights. The hardwork of the fifth years, under the direction of Claire Lohan, Paul Kilraine and Carl Hession, prduced a feast of song, dance, colourful sets and costume.

School Concert Fundraiser 2008
The fundraising concert for rowing club, produced by Carl Hession, was a great success. It featured international acts Frankie Gavin, Michelle Lally & Johnny Duhan; Lennon Family, Cubists, Geraldine King, Benefits, Cunningham Family and the school orchestra & choir.
